In life, we face two kinds of mountains: those God calls us to move and those He calls us to climb. Both require faith.
Throughout Scripture, mountains are places of challenges, encounter and transformation. Jesus spoke of faith that moves mountains, Moses climbed the mountain to meet with God and Jesus often withdrew to mountains to pray and commune with the Father.
In Exodus 24, God called Moses to the mountaintop while the Israelites remained below. Mountains are often surrounded by valleys and they can represent seasons of hardship, opposition and struggle. Yet Psalm 23 reminds us that even in the valley, we do not walk alone – God is with us.
Some mountains are obstacles standing in our way. In Matthew 17:20, Jesus taught that faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. Though He was addressing the disciples’ inability to cast out a demon, His message remains powerful: it is not the size of our faith that matters most, but the greatness of the One our faith is placed in.
Mountains today may appear as financial struggles, emotional battles, relationships, mental burdens or spiritual challenges. Some come through our own decisions, while others arise through circumstances beyond our control. As believers, we are not exempt from mountains, but God has given us a way to face them – faith.
Sometimes faith speaks to the mountain and watches God move it. Other times, faith climbs, trusting that God will strengthen and sustain us through the valley and waits for us on the mountaintop.
No matter the mountain before you, may God give you the wisdom to know which one to climb and which one He will move. Both require trust, surrender and faith in the God who is more than able.
